Bi-County Solid Waste Management owes the great success of its recycling program to a combination of factors — excellent participation by the public, local schools and business community and excellent administration by Bi-County itself.
Recycling, of course, helps the environment, saves on energy and extends the life of the landfill. For the first six months of 2009, 11,766 tons of recyclables were hauled from the landfill, which is actually more than the 11,226 tons for an entire year in 2002.

The basic makeup of the ocean waters off the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast region has fundamentally changed in the last 40 years because of climate change, commercial fishing pressures, and growing coastal populations, according to a new report.
The 2009 Ecosystem Status Report says fish populations in U.S. waters from North Carolina to Maine have moved from their traditional homes because of a changing environment and human activities.

British scientific researchers demonstrated that genetically modified DNA from crops can find its way into human gut bacteria, raising possible health concerns. This is because antibiotic-resistant marker genes are inserted with GM material, which could cause a person to be resistant to antibiotic medicines.

The study was conducted at Newcastle University on seven human volunteers who, in the past, had their lower intestine removed and now use colostomy bags. After eating a burger containing GM soy, researchers compared their stools with 12 people with normal stomachs.

Brazil’s environment minister says increased policing has brought a sharp drop in Amazon deforestation over the past year, despite July’s jump in logging.
Predicting 2009 will witness a significant decline in clearing, Carlos Minc said on Tuesday there had been a 46 per cent fall in the jungle’s destruction since July 2008, with just 4375sq km cleared.
However, satellite data obtained by the Brazilian government suggests that some 836.5sq km were cleared in July alone, an increase on the previous year.
Nevertheless, Minc says that the 8500sq km expected to be felled in 2009 is an improvement.
