Gardeners consider ecological impact<7span>

Gardener 3

THE DAILY NEWS JOURNAL • August 31, 2009
Judy Joachimi, president, conducted a brief business meeting. Margaret Scott of the program committee introduced Judy Cunningham of the Rutherford County Master Gardeners who presented a program on “Attracting Birds and Butterflies to your Garden.”
Cunningham stressed the importance of butterflies and birds in the ecological balance. In addition to their aesthetic value, birds and butterflies are necessary to the pollination of many horticultural species. As an example, 160 species of plants are dependent on hummingbirds for pollination. In recent years there has been a widespread concern among lepidopterists about a significant decline in the butterfly population, especially affecting Monarchs. These butterfly specialists have started MonarchWatch.org at the University of Kansas as an information resource for the public. They report that the development of rural lands and subsequent encroachment of suburbia created a loss of 8 million acres of butterfly-friendly fields. Monarch Watch offers specific suggestions for home butterfly specialists.
Butterflies require chemical-free areas. There are any number of flowers that attract butterflies, pentas and lantana along with such classic favorites as zinnias, cosmos, butterfly bush and nasturiums. The flowers that attract butterflies are also favored by birds, especially hummers. Butterflies need a nearby water source, perhaps a bowl for “puddling.”

UN conference to help countries adapt to global warming, share climate information

UN help Nation 1

GENEVA August 30, 2009 (AP)

As nations negotiate tough decisions on cutting greenhouse gases, the United Nations is holding a separate conference on coping with more floods, droughts and other effects of climate change already assured.
The World Climate Conference — which avoids the political pitfall of discussing cuts to carbon emissions — aims to make sure poor countries have the same access to climate data as rich ones, and that the information is shared among scientists and governments worldwide.

Atienza: Green industries to benefit RP

Green Jobs 1

09/01/2009
Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Lito Atienza yesterday underscored the importance of green industries not only in softening the impact of climate change, but also in generating jobs and incomes.
“Increase jobs and incomes while slowing down climate change. Perk up the economy with, through, and for the environment,” Atienza in a press statement, a week before the holding of the International Conference on Green Industry in Asia slated on 9-11 September 2009 at the Philippines International Convention Center in Manila.

THE NEED TO ADDRESS the environmental problems caused by industrialization has long been overdue.
In the case of the Philippines, buildings are estimated to account for 40 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions, a major culprit behind the climate change that everyone is witnessing.

Fruit is better than ....

An international team of scientists has found that the polyphenol content of fruits has been underestimated.

Polyphenol content in fruits usually refers to extractable polyphenols, but a Spanish scientist working at the Institute of Food Research in Norwich analysed apple, peach and nectarine. She found that nonextractable polyphenol content is up to five times higher than extractable compounds. This work has been published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

China save Oil

Plastic bag ban saves 3m tonnes of oil a year

(Xinhua)
Updated: 2009-08-30 11:24

BEIJING: China’s limits on the use of plastic bags cut crude oil consumption by 3 million tonnes per year, according to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).

Since June 1, 2008, all Chinese retailers, including supermarkets, department stores and groceries, no longer provided free plastic shopping bags. In addition, China banned ultra-thin plastic bags, or those thinner than 0.025 mm.
China is trying to cut the use of plastic bags in a bid to reduce energy consumption and polluting emissions.
The plastic bag limits could save about 2.4 million to 3.0 million tonnes of crude oil every year and cut 7.6 million to 9.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year, the NDRC said.
The NDRC said it would further implement the regulations and inspect execution of the ban nationwide.
Retailers who did not list shopping bags on the receipts or continued to provide free plastic shopping bags would be fined from 5,000 yuan (732.06 U.S. dollars) to 10,000 yuan, according to the State Administration for Industry and Commerce.

How green socialism can save the UK

Britain is ideally placed to lead the world on renewable energy. But a free market lacks the nerve to avert climate change crisis

It may be a crisis that is too good to waste but we have to move fast to define and win support for a progressive response to the failures of the market. But a new socialism can only be built on the politics of sustainability.
We must remember that it is not just banks that have failed. Two years into the worst economic crisis since the 1930s, with more than 2.4 million already without work, the official closure earlier this month of Britain’s only wind turbine blade manufacturing plant, Vestas, is a sharp reminder of the failure of blind reliance on free markets to solve the economic and climate change crises. The plant’s closure, with the loss of 400 jobs, was blamed on the slow pace of growth in the UK’s wind turbine market and the drawn out local planning process to agree projects.

Adapting to global warming may be cheaper than reversing it.

By Bjorn Lomborg

Striking the right balance between preventing global warming and adapting to its effects is one of the most important – and most vexing – policy questions of our age. It is also often ignored.According to the conventional wisdom of many environmental campaigners, we should first do everything we can to mitigate global warming, and only then focus on adaptation strategies. This seems wrong – even immoral – if we could do more for people and the planet through adaptation.

London (ddp). Because of beauty mistakes unmarketable water melons
would be an ideal basis for the production of Ethanol as a bio-fuel.
American researchers discovered this and point to the fact, that up to now, one
fifth of the harvest on the fields remains lying. These melons don’t reach the standards esthetically and find no buyers. The Ethanol could be won in a procedure, in which melons at first are used in the production of substances like Carotinoide and the amino acid Citrullin, for the production of different pharaceutical substances, wrote Wayne Fish and his colleagues at the university of Oklahoma in Lane, in the professional journal “Biotechnology for Biofuels”.

Your House in the Green Dress the Green Project

Even if you own no ecologically built house, but own one, you should fit out it green.

Already our ancestry appreciated the use of climbing plants for the green project and it is a pity, actually, that one has left in last decades this tradition thus. Climbing plants destroy the masonry, it is often maintained erroneously. Besides, intact house walls are not thereby damaged at all. The custody roots of the climbing plants do not penetrate into the masonry, they have merely the task to hold the plants on the wall.

Covered with greenery walls become humid, one also often says.
The opposite is the case.

Beautiful Hair a Body in Green

August 9, 2009 by Erwin Heid · Leave a Comment

Beautiful hair by less polluting means and a body in green

No body part is washed around by so many means like the scalp and hair.
The high Tenside concentration of most shampoos causes a raised fat reduction of the scalp which can lead, among others, to eczemas and allergies. Colorings are suspected to cause cancer and preservatives do not belong on our scalp either and for a body in green.
